Born into a musical family, George Job Elvey sang at Canterbury Cathedral during his boyhood and attended the Royal Academy of Music. He was appointed "master of the boys" and organist at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, England, and served there for nearly half a century.
Elvey wrote several familiar hymn tunes, including "Come, Ye Thankful People Come" and "Crown Him with Many Crowns." Interestingly, he was knighted in 1871 for his composition Festival March, which was played at the wedding of Princess Louise.
